How to make your DIY Sugar Scrub

Juliana Ilievski

During winter, the air tends to be cold and dry. This low humidity can cause moisture to evaporate from our skin, leading to dryness. Dry skin is more susceptible to cracking and flaking because it lacks the necessary moisture and oils to maintain its elasticity.

Additionally, exposure to harsh winds and indoor heating systems can further strip moisture from the skin, exacerbating the problem.

It's important to keep the skin moisturised and protected during winter to prevent cracking.

To make a simple sugar scrub at home, you will need the following ingredients:
1. Sugar: 1 cup (granulated white or brown sugar)
2. Carrier Oil: ½ cup (such as coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil)
3. Optional: Essential oils for fragrance (e.g., lavender, peppermint, citrus)
Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of sugar with ½ cup of carrier oil. Mix well until the sugar is evenly coated with the oil.
2. If desired, add a few drops of your preferred essential oil(s) to the mixture for fragrance. Start with a small amount and adjust based on your preference.
3. Stir the ingredients thoroughly until everything is well combined. The consistency should be slightly grainy but spreadable.
4. Transfer the sugar scrub into a clean, airtight container for storage. You can use a glass jar or a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid.
To use the sugar scrub:
1. Wet your skin in the shower or bath and turn the shower off
2. Take a small amount of the sugar scrub and gently massage it onto your skin using circular motions. Focus on areas that need exfoliation, such as elbows, knees, and rough patches.
3. Rinse off the scrub with warm water and pat your skin dry with a towel.
4. Follow up with a moisturiser
